This clinical genetics fellowship was such an eye-opener. As a fetal medicine practitioner, my idea before joining the course was to know which test to write for which condition. Then after joining understood it's not that simple. Now for every abnormal case, I take three generation pedigree and guide my patients appropriately. Apart from our prenatal cases, I have started seeing other clinical genetics cases and counselling them to the best of my knowledge. Shagun madam and Prajnya madam were so approachable and will patiently clear all my doubts, no matter how silly it is. Grateful to both of them for making me what I'm today. The department was so peaceful, which was very helpful in the learning process. Overall it was a wonderful learning experience. I would advise every fetal medicine practitioner to undergo such dedicated genetics training for a better understanding of the subject and to serve the people better. |

We come across lots of genetic disorders during day to day clinical practice. With the advancement of medical science and technology, many of them can be diagnosed prenatally or by newborn screening or during childhood. Early diagnosis is of great importance for start of proper management, so far available, before irreversible damage occurs. Prevention of genetic disorder is another important aspect to reduce the incidence of disability. For this the knowledge of genetics is required. |

At the outset, I'm grateful to Dr. Shagun and the entire SIAMG committee for going out of the way to consider my application.
1) It's a unique initiative with a noble intention. Every day was a very enriching learning experience. OPD was a visual treat as I had the chance to see many exotic cases just mentioned as a rare entity in textbooks.
2)The course enables a clinician to develop a systematic approach to an inherited disorder and draw a definite conclusion on the basis of key clinical features. I got a chance to participate in foetal autopsy equipping me to identify dysmorphic features, lab exposure at CDFD gave me an insight into the various available tests. Also had the exposure of telemeet conducted in the second week of every month.
3)Extremely grateful to the very friendly residents Dr. Surya, Dr. Gayatri, Dr. Laxmi, Dr. Mallikarjun and Dr. Priya for teaching me the basic approach ie History taking, clinical examination, interpreting the reports, helping me deal with the patients and clearing my doubts every day.
4)My sincere gratitude to dedicated mentors Dr. Prajyna, Dr. Shagun, Dr. Dhanya and Dr. Ashwin for taking due interest and guiding me throughout. The discussion during OPD and seminars gave me a better practical understanding of genodermatoses. The experience gained thus enhanced my acumen in this field.
Would recommend this fellowship to be of longer duration and open for clinicians of all specialities.

Due to lack of understanding about the subject, Genetics or may I say Genomics is presently misunderstood topic especially for people who are not in direct touch with the subject. Most of us from clinical branches have very little idea about the Genomics and how that can help understand disease pathology in our respective fields. In this short period of 3 months, I have realised that the clinical work should have a genomic correlation especially in Neurology where a big number of disorders have a genetic basis. Even-though many of the disease might be having polygenic inheritance so may have much complexities to their etiopathogenesis but an attempt to understand those complexities might be our first step to solve them and provide clinically relevant solutions. |
At present, I am joining my previous duties. I aim to continue studying neurogenetics in some form and to get more doctors interested in this topic.

I am grateful to my institution - RRMCH, Bangalore and Dr.Adarsh, the HOD of Pediatrics, for having given me the permission to do this fellowship program. My heartfelt thanks to SIAMG-GENZYME for conducting this unique program which enriches medical knowledge and helps to gain experience in medical genetics.
I recently had an opportunity to attend the 14th ICMR medical genetics course which was a great experience, but my curiosity did not stop there ... At end of the course, I heard about the fellowship program. And hence, enrolled in it at NIMS, Hyderabad.
The NIMS medical genetic department has excellent and dedicated consultants - Dr. Prajnya and Dr. Shagun.
There is a diversity of cases presented to the OPD from the different parts of India. Many patients have visited many places to arrive at a diagnosis; this center helped those patients. With an advancing medical field in India, many investigations are now available. Interpretation of the investigation results make difference in the patient's demeanor.
Many cases which we might have read and seen in the textbook or have heard from colleagues, we get the opportunity to see on a first hand basis.
This course helps in the approach of rare diseases and of inherited diseases. It also teaches us the importance of premarital, prenatal and preimplantation diagnosis and newborn screening.
The learning process started from the first day, where there was importance of detailed history taking, careful examination and arriving at a probable diagnosis. The tough part initially was counseling the patient and trying to make them understand the disease. The treatment of many of these diseases are still in the research phase. These needed an extended counseling to patients. In this courses I got chance to take part in fetal autopsy and see the malformations, which I had only read about.
In addition to routine teaching while seeing the patient, there are case presentations, journal clubs and seminars. However it does not end here, telemedicine is done every month.
The course provided exposure to the lab at CDFD. Dr. Ashwin sir, helped me in the interpretation of investigation reports.
Two friendly residents- Dr. Karthik and Dr. Vijayalakshmi, also helped me a lot.
Overall it is great course, allowing me to take home many new concepts, knowledge and profound confidence. |
I plan to do more fetal autopsy and will continue to help pediatric patients especially the genetically based ones. |

The case load, rare diseases, observing different clues to syndromes, prenatal testing and the teaching by the consultants has been remarkable.
Genetics for me prior to this course was a sentence which we wrote in the opd case papers of patients "REFER TO HIGHER CENTRE FOR GENETIC EVALUATION".
Now I can go back to say I have tested the waters of this field , obviously not entirely, but atleast a bit.
Would recommend this fellowship to be of longer duration.
My Learning curve did experience an exponential rise.

Dr. Abha Shalya |
MS OBGY, private practice |
1st September to 31st December |
SGPGI, LUCKNOW |
I am planning to do private practice as a medical geneticist and fetal therapist and this fellowship has helped me a lot. It improved my knowledge on clinical syndrome and approach to diagnosis and has also observed good number of TIFA and invasive procedures. The genetic lab exposure was also helpful to learn Karyn type and QfPCR |

Dr. Nisha. M |
MBBS, MD (Paediatrics), Fellowship in Paediatric Genetics. |
1/1/17 to 31/3/17 |
SAT Hospital and Genetic Lab, CDC, Govt. Medical College , Trivandrum,Kerala. |
The fellowship program was very useful. I had a great opportunity of working with Dr. Sankar and his excellent lab team. I have seen many rare interesting clinical cases in the genetic clinic. Also met with many difficult Counseling scenarios, antenatal cases, pre and post test counseling. As I have done fellowship in pediatric Genetics earlier, this training gave me an opportunity to have a hands on experience in Karyotyping, DNA isolation, PCR and in depth knowledge of mutation analysis by sequencing. Also I was able to clarify many of my lab related doubts with the excellent genetic lab team. I presented poster in "Manipal Genetics Update on Genetic Counseling ", March 3rd & 4th , 2017, which won the first prize. I am grateful to Genzyme, SIAMG for having given me this great opportunity. |
To work more in the field of genetics. To increase the awareness of genetic diseases among public and provide proper genetic counseling. |
